Replacement of a single front tooth - Dr. Fred Peck

by Dr. Fred Peck, DDS 23. June 2011 07:00

There are three basic options to replace a single front tooth. The first option is a dental implant. This has become the standard of care for a tooth replacement. A dental implant is an artificial root over which a dental crown can be placed to match the adjacent teeth. The process for an upper front tooth will take between 4-12 months from start to finish, depending on the pre-existing conditions. There are many additional options so the patient never has to leave the office without a tooth replacement in that space.

The next option is a fixed dental bridge, which is not removable. The downside of this option if untreated adjacent teeth are present, is that the teeth need to be cut down to allow for enough room of the porcelain replacement. This turns a one tooth problem into a three tooth problem. If crowns are already present in the patient's mouth, this may be a viable option.

The last option is a removable partial denture. The denture is not overly stable, but can be held in well with a variety of attachments. Food does tend to collect under the partial denture and has to be removed for proper hygiene and comfort. Each of these options has many other components to consider. Discuss these options with your dentist to obtain the best results for your oral health.
