How Much Will You Sacrifice for Fashion? Part 1: High Heels

by Dr. P. Carl Rafey 29. August 2011 09:43

Fashion demands that every cocktail dress and pair of jeans must have the perfect shoes to match; most likely those shoes will be some form of high heels. To most women, high heels are the epitome of sexy. If you ask most doctors, they will tell you high heels are the epitome feet, ankle, knee hip and back pain.

High heels raise the feet off of the ground changing the body's normal posture while standing and walking. The higher the heels, the more the pelvis tips forward and the more stress is placed on the low back. Another consequence of high heels is short, tight calf muscles and hamstrings. These muscles bend our knees and hips. If these muscle are not moving correctly, the joints are not moving correctly and more stress is placed on the knees and hips. This fancy foot-wear also places a large amount of stress on the balls of the feet. Instead of having an area of about 2 square feet to hold the body's weight, there is only of third of that increasing the pressure on the balls of the feet 50-70%. There is also the issue of improper biomechanics of the toes when in this position, which can lead to hallicusvalgus, or bunions.

Only you can decide if sacrificing your toes, ankles, knees, hips and spine is worth a few hours of looking "glamorous."
